Yep that’s right I said ANYONE! In my humble opinion, homesteading is so much more than leaving the life you know and living off the land on a 100 acre ranch. (Though that would be AMAZING) I’m talking about realistic ideas to make the most of what you do have. For me, it’s all about making things a little simpler and becoming more self-reliant.
The year 2020 with it’s worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, has really opened our eyes to see just how prepared (or not) we are. For me personally, I NEVER want to feel like I have to go out and “panic buy” ever again!
Let me say this, I am on this journey with you! I want to be more prepared next time. I want to be able to stay in the safety of my own home and know that we are good, were prepared, we can rely on ourselves and the resources we have here. It’s a journey and a process and it can be totally overwhelming at times. But I am your biggest cheerleader! You can do this! Take it one day and one step at a time.
Here are a few ideas of some simple easy things you can start learning about and doing to be more self reliant:
- Learn to bake/cook. No better time than now to brush up on some cooking skills or learn a new one! Try my easy bread recipe!
- Inventory what you already have make a list of all the food/supplies you have on hand. This will help you see the gaps and make a game plan on how to fill them
- Maximize your space. Do you have a big backyard that could accommodate a garden? Make a plan for next season. Maybe even look for seeds now or an emergency seed kit to have on hand.
- No yard? No worries! What about a container garden or fresh herbs or Aloe Vera in a window seal?
- Already garden? What about preserving your harvest? Learn about canning or dehydrating your food to stock up and last you the winter. Find recipes to use your harvest to cook and freeze for later like Grandma’s Zucchini Bread.
- Learn about essential oils and herbs. Having a basic knowledge of these can be huge! What if you have no access to medications? It will come in handy to know how to treat a few basic aliments. Check out my top 10 favorite oils!
- Learn to crochet, knit, or sew. If you need to make what you have last a little longer, you’ll be grateful to have these skills.
- Learn about raising animals. If you have room and are zoned to have them, adding chickens, sheep, goats, cattle etc. can bring in good sources of revenue as well as food source.
These are just scratching the surface, but I think you’ll find as you take it one step at a time you will feel more confident to try new things. The best part of all… you will feel such a sense of accomplishment and independence, and that is what this journey is all about! Looking for more ideas?
