We have been raising Southdown Babydoll sheep for the last 12 years! We instantly fell in love with those sweet teddy bear faces! Though we have had a few losses along the way, they have been a relatively easy breed to raise. We sell our lambs every spring and sell the wool to a local spinner who uses it to make beautiful yarn. She always gives me a skein and I love seeing the final product. Some day when my boys are a little older I would love to learn to spin the wool myself. But for now I’ll enjoy the little bit Michelle shares with me!
Speaking of wool, this particular breed is known for their luxurious wool. A babydoll’s fleece generally runs in the 19 to 22 micron range, which puts the fleece in the class of cashmere.
They are wonderful little weed eaters and keep our pastures mowed and fertilized. They do well in orchards because they maintain weeds and fertilize without harming the trees. They are under 24″ tall which keeps them short enough to stay away from fruits.
They are definitely herd animals and do not do well alone. We require ours to be sold in pairs usually because of their strong herd instincts. They are wonderful little companions such easy keepers.
They have such a sweet and friendly disposition. It’s been so much fun to raise our boys with the sheep. It’s taught them so much responsibility and ownership. I’m really proud of them for their hard work and late nights during lambing season! (They can’t miss the lambs being born!)
If your looking for an easy, adorable, fun animal to add to your homestead consider these little guys! I’m always happy to answer questions about them or you can learn more from The Olde English Babydoll Sheep Registry.
